Romanian Rubble

We’ve seen quite a lot of eastern Europe on this trip but we have to say that Romania most closely resembles what we thought it would all be like. Romania suffered terribly under both the post-war Soviet rule and the subsequent dictatorship of Nicolae Ceaucescu. This is immediately apparent when you enter the country. Couchsurfing with Hans

Well, we’ve couchsurfed on floors, in tents and, shock, in beds too but this time we broke new ground, staying in an office on the floor on a bed made out of cushions from the office chairs. Hans works for an ecology NGO that is trying to help the town of Sighisoara come to terms with it’s need to join the 21st century. He was the one who answered our request for a place to stay. Money for nothing though ‘chips’ weren’t free

Picture the scene: our bikes beside us, we’re sitting in a remote field in deepest Transylvania having lunch. Around us lie scattered our meagre provisions. There’s half a cucumber, some cheese, a couple of bread roll things, a tiny jam jar filled with salt, pepper in a ziploc bag, some yogurts and a couple of bottles of water.
