The Last Train out of Town

Well we’ve been battling with Orthodox Easter for a while now, ever since a Russian woman in Siberia tried to sell us easter eggs she’d made by hand on the train heading to Moscow. Of course, we celebrated Easter, you may remember, at a rather stuffy service for foreigners in Beijing a loooooooooooooong time ago. But Orthodox churches do things differently (or rather we do depending on your point of view.)

So, what has that to do with trains. Well, while we were in Athens, it was the end of the week long Easter holiday. The beginning of it had seen us stranded on Samos actually but more transport hassle was to be provided right down to the end of the week on the last train leaving Athens for Thessaloniki in the north. Grollywood

Giannis, it turns out, is a budding film producer. He showed us a few of his creations on his pc and, I have to say, he has a definite talent for putting an interesting bit of film together. At some point in the vast amount of conversation we had with him, he let slip that he was looking for someone who could do some camera work for him while he directed. I made his day: I told him I’d happily be his cameraman. He even offered to pay me twenty euros.

So, on our last evening, as the sun was setting, Giannis grabbed a video camera, a new tape, a tripod, a ninja turtle, a Colt .45 (no not real) and a can of spray deodorant and we headed out into big bad Athens to see what happened. Read the rest of this entry »
