Spreadsheet v4
If you’re a fan of the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die list, you’ve come to absolutely the right place. Arukiyomi’s 1001 Books spreadsheet has been downloaded over 40,000 times since it was first released as a companion to the first edition of Boxall’s book in May 2007. The book is in its third edition. The spreadsheet has just been released in its fourth. Read on…
Version 4 is packed full of new features and it blows anything released before out of the water. Don’t believe me? Well, see the feature list and if that doesn’t grab you, check out a few screenshots. If you’re still not convinced, there are four screencasts too. FAQs are also available. If you’ve downloaded it and have some questions, this is the place to ask them or see answers already posted.

If you are operating a different version of Excel or another spreadsheet program or use a different operating system, I cannot guarantee that all the features below will work correctly. If you choose the Full or Developer versions, compatibility with your system is your responsibility. There will be no refunds in the case of a compatibility issue. If in doubt, get the Lite version. | ||

Hi Arukiyomi,
I’m really looking forward to the new spreadsheet. The snapshots look great! One thing that I always like to have (or will add as a customisation to your own spreadsheet) is a ‘w’ for books on my wish list.
Cheers,
Kylie

aha… good one. It’s a little tricky in Excel 2003 as it will only allow three types of conditional formatting… I’ve r and tbr … I think I can squeeze in one more letter in this version if I work on it today. Thanks for the suggestion!

Wow, this looks amazing. My excitement levels for this new spreadsheet has gone up dramatically since viewing those screen caps. It looks incredible and I can’t wait to start filling in everything, definitely will be going for the deluxe version.

My artspace: search for “stranges” and look for the tabby cat.
Arukiyomi, my husband and I use your list to track my fiction reading, and I am *so* looking forward to your new list. Please send a ping out on Bookcrossing when it’s ready. I’m there.

. I have a few friends who are also working through the 1001 Books and I’ve told them all about your spreadsheet. Rock on!

Hiya, I was messing around with the stats page (picking different countries to see what happened) and I noticed that when I picked Sweden my life expectancy as a female was only 39. I’m sure all book-reading Swedes are expecting to live a little longer than that!

wow… you’ve found a major bug. Thank you SO much for letting me know. It’s sorted now and everyone who had downloaded Full and Developer versions has been contacted if they’re affected. It only affects people who choose a nationality above Belgium in the alphabet. One exception: people who choose the UK as, coincidentally, the country that is alphabetically above them (the UAE) has virtually the same life expectancies so they’re unaffected!
Future downloads are fixed for this bug.

I Think I may have found a bug: When searching through the alphabetical title drop-down menu, it appears that none of the titles beyond #1001 on the list appears. I was looking for a specific book (“Dracula”) that I knew was there and it didn’t show up on the alphabetical list. Then I looked on my earlier version to see approximately where it was, and there it was. Found that if I kept going up, it wasn’t until I got to the title #1001 that it showed up in the drop-down list.

[...] 28 May As you have probably noticed, I’ve decided to take on the daunting task of trying to complete the list of 1001 books that I apparently MUST read before I die. I was browsing in my local bookstore and came across this compilation by Peter Boxall. It’s a very intriguing list and after glancing through it, I noticed so many books that I not only recognized, but had wanted to read for a while. So what better time to start than now. I found a wonderful spreadsheet that someone made in Excel which allows you to mark which books you’ve read along with your age and gives you an estimate on how many you would need to read in a year. You can find the spreadsheet here: http://johnandsheena.co.uk/books/?page_id=1806. [...]

Have you considered creating one of these databases, but for FILMS? It would be a great addition to your already fantastic site!

somewhere out there on the web, there’s a film one… but I’m not really into films though. If I had the time, maybe I would create one…

I have a problem – I used to have the 2008 version with a separate page for the ones that had been dropped, and I loved it. I planned on following the 2008 list only. However, my laptop died – and as I forgot to back it up, the list has gone along. Now, if I could (as in, had a card that worked with paypal) I would donate in order to get the full list…. alas, I can’t. I do not wish to follow the 2010 list, as I was decided on the 08 one. Could you somehow send me the old 2008 list? TIA.

Hi Bárbara, I’m afraid old versions of the spreadsheets are no longer available. The 2010 Lite version really doesn’t differ that much from the 2008 version; only 11 books are different. If however the Lite version doesn’t meet your needs, there are alternative ways to pay with Paypal that don’t involve credit cards: electronic cheque and bank transfers are two.

(Hmm, seems my comment was lost)
Anyways, Ill try again.
Love this spreadsheet, is def. gonna get Full version.
My only questions is, do you have to re-donate every time you release a new one?
Seems kinda cheap, but I’m a student and every penny counts.
Thanks

Hi Mårten… if you get the Full version now and sometime in the future I do update the spreadsheet to a new version, you won’t be charged anything for downloading that providing that we can find a record of your payment. I usually have paypal receipts and if you keep yours that might be useful in the future. However, no plans for a long while to do anything like create a new version.
