1001 Books to Read Before You Die - new edition

Thanks to all of you and your feedback, I’m rolling out v3 of the spreadsheet today a month short of the spreadsheet’s 2nd anniversary. This edition includes

  • Wikipedia/Google Books hyperlinks: updated these where new information had become available.
  • Amazon links: deleted these because, quite frankly, they bring in virtually nothing and clutter up the spreadsheet. The only people making money from links to Amazon are Amazon.
  • Toned down graphics: Not as garish as it used to be!
  • Better filtering: your feedback means the new version filters tbr and r columns along with your titles.
  • Frozen top section: Headings and totals at the top are now frozen in place so that you can see them when you scroll down.
  • Totals sheet: Another request that I’ve included is that now you get a separate sheet that lists progress with both lists together for the die hard reading challengers among us.

I’ve just pipped the 200 mark at 205 books with 86 to be read. What about you?

DOWNLOAD INSTRUCTIONS – READ THIS AND SAVE THE SUPPORT!

Just click the button you need below or right click and Save Target As…. You should get a zip file (because IE7 can’t cope with Excel 2007 files being downloaded any other way). You’ll need to unzip the file to get a save-able copy. If not, it will be a read-only copy. That’s no problem either. If it’s read only then use Save As… and give it your own filename.

Please note that if you can’t figure it out and want me to email you a copy, you’ll need to provide me with as much info as possible about why you can’t open the spreadsheet and what program, OS, browser etc you’re using before I’ll oblige. Help me to help you! Cheers.

FAQs

I’ve entered in all my r and tbr cells but the totals don’t change. Why is this?
You need to save the file. Once you do, it will calculate the values at the top of the spreadsheet.

Why can’t I save the file?
Did you read the instructions above? You need to extract it first before you can save it.

If you truly cannot get either version to work, comment on this thread. Include your email and let me know which version you want. I’ll send you one as an attachment.

If anyone wants to thank me for this, get in touch. That tbr list can hold more!

Version History:

  • v1.0 – released 30 May 2007
  • v2.0 – released 30 August 2008
  • v2.1 – released 30 December 2008 – 2008 list reordered to actual updated edition, 2 books added that were missed off 2008 list, 2 books moved from 2008 list to 2006 list.
  • v3.0 – released 30 April 2009 – removed amazon links, improved filtering, added frozen panes, added totals sheet, changed graphics
  • v3.1 – released 01 May 2009 – dealt with some typos, corrected formulas to actually give reading rates for those lists alone, changed feedback link to v3 page (all thanks to Plekter!)
  • v3.2 – released 19 May 2009 – removed an erroneous entry to Ken Kesey from the removed list (thanks to Steven!)
  • v3.3 – released 19 June 2009 – changed totals that formulas were using to calculate – my bad (thanks to Daniel for pointing this out. Great attention to detail man.)
  • Hopefully that’s it for a while!

  2. Thanks heaps! My mom’s happily typing away (r, tbr) ;)
Does anyone know if there’s such a list for mystery/detective books??

I found a few “top 100″ detective book lists online and I’m replacing your titles/authors in the xlsx. Works fine and I can still keep count with ‘r’ and ‘tbr’, thanks again, this time from me as well !!

  5. Hi, I love your spreadsheets! Love em!

Couple of things on the 2003 sheetv3:

    + Love the totals! Great!
+ frozen panes: Makes it so much more easy to work with!
+ the tbr pile count: inspiring!!

    - On the 2008 sheet it says: “To complete the books removed from the 2006 list, you need to read an average of
” (I can offcourse fix this text for my self…no biggie.) And this text seems to be missing altogether on the totals sheet.
    - b10 and b11 in both 2008 and removed 2006 seems to refer to the total, and not the amount of books needed to read to complete the 2008, and 2006 seperately.
    - The link in faq goes to the v2 page on here…

    Keep up the good work!

  8. Please note that Sometimes a Great Notion by Ken Kesey is erroneously listed in the “removed books” in the v.3 spreadsheet, item #151. (It also appears in the 2008 Edition tab #410.) I checked the publisher’s website, and it is still in the 2008 edition. I don’t think anything else should be listed in its place. I did an independent listing of the two editions and came up with a total of 1283 books, so there should be only 282 on the removed list.

  11. This could be a stupid question. Do you re-enter all your data every time you have a newly updated 1001 excel file? It just seems like a lot of work for me (the user, that is). Just wondering if people have a better way to transfer the data over. Simple copy-paste? Thanks for sharing the spreadsheets, they’re wonderful!

Comment by mee — May 25, 2009 @ 3:04 am Quote this comment

  12. I personally don’t change spreadsheets. I’ve got my own version which I hack as I want. I have thought about the fact that anyone switching from version to version would need to reenter data but I personally don’t have time or inclination to figure out a way to udpate automatically. Copy and paste would work and some of the colours might change but that’s a small price to pay.

Let’s face it though mee, re-entering your data may seem like a lot of work for you the user, but you might want to think about the work it took to create and then update this spreadsheet in the first place. It certainly seems like a lot of work to me ;-)

  14. Great spreadsheet! I was actually making my own one, but it was just too much work with the 2nd edition ;-)

I found 2 small errors though:

    - In v3.2, you removed the erroneous entry. However, the formulas in the 2006 sheet (cells B10 & B11) are still based on 283 books. Same goes for the formulas in cells B13, B14, D8 & D10. These should be 1283 instead of 1284.

    - The cells D5 & D7 in the 2006 sheet are based on 1001 books. These should also be 282 books of course!

  17. This spreadsheet looks great, but I think I would prefer to use the 2006 list of books, rather than 2008. So for me it would be better to list the 2006 list and then in a separate tab the additions in 2008; instead of the 2008 list and removals from 2006. If that made any sense…Or just the two lists without comparing what’s been added/removed.

  22. Hello…love the spreadsheet, and thanks for all your hard work!!

Quick question, though – I used the first spreadsheet (I think) but I’m now a Mac user. Is there anyway to get a copy that will work on a Mac?

Unfortunately, I have no idea what this will entail, since I don’t have Microsoft Office for Mac…would a pdf work? If it can’t be done, no biggie, but I do miss having it.

    Anyway, thanks again!

  23. @Bibliolatrist: hmmm… well, when it comes to Macs I really have no idea either. I think the only way to go would be Office for Mac. pdf files are not interactive so you’d only get an image of the spreadsheet AFAIK. You could keep a cheap pc dedicated to just running your 1001 list – now that’s commitment!

Comment by Arukiyomi — July 14, 2009 @ 6:22 pm Quote this comment

  24. @Bibliolatrist with regard to the Mac issue, save the spread sheet as a .csv file and the you can open it with any spreadsheet program such as OpenOffice, which will also, mostly, handle all the macros etc as well. The cell formulas work fine it’s just the macros which struggle sometimes.

You could always get a virtual PC on the Mac and the MS office excel viewer, that’d work as well.

I am not aware of an excel viewer for the mac but ther might be one, search the MS site.

@Bibliolatrist. I use a MacBook Pro with Office for Mac – which doesn’t open xlsx or docx files! So what I do is use Zamzar to convert these files online to xls or doc. As for Office software, as a couple of people suggested here, try OpenOffice and Google Docs (I use the latter a lot).

  42. sorry to hear you’re having problems. I did try Calc for Open Office but I found it really couldn’t handle the spreadsheet well at all so it could well be that by opening the Excel file in Calc some of the formulae won’t work for you.

In spite of looking a gift horse in the mouth, is there any, any hope of alphabetizing the sections? It’s so hard to plow thru and when I do a search, I can’t insert it back into the master list.

  47. Hi Constance… thanks for the suggestion. Your idea works, but only for those who are interested in what’s been removed. Most people are interested in the actual 1001 list as it stands for many reasons; that they feel the original 1001 list was too WASPcentric for example. We’ve got a new edition of the list due for March 2010 and, if things carry on the way they are, the spreadsheet as you suggest it will have less and less on the ‘common books’ tab over the years. So, for those reasons, I’ve decided to stick with the 1001 list as current and then add a tab for whatever’s removed for each edition. I do, however, have an idea up my sleeve for common books over the years but you’ll have to wait until the 4th edition of the list is published hopefully in late spring.

  50. I have the same OpenOfficeproblem mentioned above. I find the calculations will only update if I put my cursor in the squares of the formulas and move it around a bit there, and THEN push CTRL+S,,, and then only the formula I messed with will update, and I have to repeat the process ofr all of them – and in a correct order. So whenever I enter a book now (had to reinstall my Excel but have lost the registration key :( ) there’s a lot more work than before to get it to update. Surely someone must have thought of some solution to this by now?

Can’t believe how much work you must have put down, by the way.
